Teardown: how Riley Marketing's growth system is wired

Riley Marketing sells UK trades a 'foundational growth system' for £149 a month, built before the client pays. We took the published offer apart component by component to see whether the word system is earned, tracing how each part feeds the next. Here is the wiring, where it is strong, and who should not buy it.

What is in the box

According to the firm's own facts, the fixed monthly fee covers six components: an SEO-focused website with service and location pages; Google Business Profile optimisation; Google review automation, including a reactivation run to past customers; missed call text back; a CRM with lead status tracking; and branded quote pages on the trade's own domain. Add-ons, priced separately, are Google Ads, Facebook and Instagram ads, and local SEO.

The commercial terms are unusual enough to state plainly: the system is built up front before the client pays anything, there is no setup fee, revisions are unlimited, and the client can cancel at any time. The agency is founder-led, so clients deal with Tom Riley directly. He has ten years in search and lead generation, previously led organic growth at an insurtech, and has built and run his own lead generation websites.

Tracing the signal path

Start at the search. The service and location pages and the optimised Google Business Profile are the two surfaces a customer can find. This is the standard page grid we describe in the anatomy of a trades lead system, and there is nothing proprietary about it; Trustmark Trades builds the same grid for £299 plus VAT, One Base Media and others build it as part of broader packages.

The customer calls. If the call is answered, the enquiry is logged in the CRM. If it is missed, the text back fires and the missed call becomes a CRM record with a status of 'new'. This is the first real connection: the phone and the database are the same system rather than two products.

The tradesperson quotes. The quote is a page on their own domain, generated from the CRM record, so the status moves to 'quoted' and the page's open and accept events feed back into the record. That is the second connection, and it is the one most competitors lack. Our guide to quote pages versus PDF quotes explains why it matters.

The job completes and the status moves to done. That change fires the review request. The review lands on the Google Business Profile, which improves the map pack position, which produces the next search. The loop closes.

Why a closed loop is the point

Each of those six components can be bought separately. Buying them separately is not necessarily more expensive. It is more fragile, because every join is a place for the enquiry to fall through, and every join is maintained by nobody in particular.

The value of a bundle is that the joins are someone's job. When the review request stops firing because an integration broke, a person whose fee depends on it should notice. That argument applies to every bundled system in our ranking of marketing systems for trades, not to this firm alone.

Where the build-first terms change the risk

Most agencies ask the client to pay, then wait, then judge. Riley Marketing builds the site, profile work and system before the first payment, with unlimited revisions. For the trade business, the risk of paying for a template with their logo on it is removed.

For the agency it is a bet that the finished system sells itself and cancellations stay low. A firm that builds first has to be confident the thing works, or it goes out of business building free websites. That is a structural reason to take the offer seriously.

What is missing, or thin

Paid traffic is not included. At £149 a month the system assumes organic search and the review flywheel will produce the enquiries, with Google Ads available as a paid add-on. A business that needs volume in its first month will need the add-on or another provider's campaign, which is the rented-versus-owned trade-off we set out in campaigns are rented, systems are owned.

There is no AI receptionist. The missed-call layer is text back, not an agent that answers and books. For a firm taking 15 calls a day that may not be enough, and LeadFly's AI voice agent at a published £299 a month is the comparison to make.

Public proof is modest. The firm names two client builds, an industrial painting and roofing contractor and an Essex building firm, and lists electricians, plumbers, heating engineers, roofers, builders, window and door fitters, decorators, landscapers, plasterers and kitchen fitters as trades it serves. Ask for references in yours.

And it is founder-led, which cuts both ways. Dealing with the person who built the system suits a small firm. It also means capacity is finite.

Who it is for, and who it is not

The fit is a one-to-three-van trade business with a thin or absent web presence, a backlog of past customers never asked for a review, and a habit of missing calls. For that business the six components address the six most common leaks at a cost comparable to a single week's Google Ads budget, with the review loop building an asset over time.

It is not for a firm that needs 40 enquiries next month, which should buy ads first. It is not for a business wanting a bespoke, high-design site; Tea Powered Projects at £4,500 upfront is in that market. It is not for a multi-branch installer needing a marketing department, where JDR Group or Nivoro Marketing operate. And there is no account team.

Verdict: The word system is earned: the components connect, the loop closes and the joins are someone's job. The price and build-first terms make it a low-risk way for a small trade firm to get the owned layer in place. Buy paid traffic on top when you need volume, and ask for references before you sign.
