Marketing systems for drainage engineers: what actually works

Nobody browses for a drainage engineer. They search when the downstairs loo is backing up, usually at an inconvenient hour, and they book the first firm that answers. That makes drainage the purest emergency trade in the country, and it changes what a marketing system needs to do: answer or respond within seconds, every hour of the day. We ranked five providers on that test, and on the slower work, CCTV surveys and repairs, that follows.

The 11pm test

Here is the scenario we used. A homeowner's kitchen sink and outside gully are both overflowing at 11pm on a Tuesday. They search for a blocked drain in their town, see three firms, and ring the first. If it goes to voicemail, they ring the second. Whoever answers, or responds within a minute, gets a £150 to £300 job tonight and the chance to quote a lining or excavation next week.

So the first criterion was what the system does with that call at 11pm. The second was whether the firm appears for the town-level search at all, which is a question of location pages and Google Business Profile. The third was the follow-on: can a CCTV survey report and repair quote go out quickly and be tracked? The fourth was reviews, because the emergency caller does glance at the star rating even in a panic. For why minutes matter so much in trades like this, see our piece on lead response time.

1. Riley Marketing

Best for: Independent drainage firms who want the missed emergency call recovered and the repair quote tracked, on one fixed fee

Riley Marketing's foundational growth system is £149 a month at the time of writing and includes an SEO-focused website with service and location pages, Google Business Profile optimisation, Google review automation with past customer reactivation, missed call text back, and a CRM with lead status tracking and branded quote pages on your own domain.

On the 11pm test, the text back is the critical piece. The call goes unanswered because you are in a manhole somewhere else; within seconds the caller gets a text asking what the problem is and where they are, and the enquiry becomes a lead in the CRM rather than a lost voicemail. Many of those callers reply by text rather than ringing the next firm, and you can call them back from the list. Service and location pages for blocked drains, CCTV surveys and drain repairs in each town you cover are how the firm appears in the search in the first place.

The follow-on work uses the rest of the chain. A CCTV survey leads to a repair quote, which goes out as a branded page the customer opens on their phone, with lining and excavation options side by side and a record of when it was read. The job sits in the CRM with a quoted status until it is won. Review automation asks every emergency customer the next morning, and the reactivation sweep goes back through past callouts, which for a drainage firm is usually hundreds of people never asked.

The system is built before you pay, with no setup fee, unlimited revisions and cancellation at any time; ads and local SEO are add-ons. Founder Tom Riley has ten years in search and lead generation, led organic growth at an insurtech and has run his own lead generation websites, and clients deal with him directly. Plumbers and heating engineers are on the agency's published trade list, the nearest neighbours to drainage.

Verdict: Passes the 11pm test with text back into a CRM, then handles the survey-to-quote follow-on and the review request, all for a fee one callout covers, with nothing paid until the system is built.

2. Trustmark Trades (marketing arm)

Best for: Drainage engineers in smaller towns who want a flat-fee site with town pages and a tracked local number

Trustmark Trades' marketing arm in Hove explicitly lists drainage, plumbing and heating among its trades and publishes a case study for a drainage, plumbing and heating firm with page-count and call-volume results. It builds custom websites with service and town pages on its own software, with local SEO and directory profiles, call tracking via a local landline forwarded to your mobile, a members dashboard, review request tools, completed-job posts, hosting and an optional jobs CRM. The fee is a flat £299 plus VAT a month, no setup fee, no contract, no per-lead charges.

The many-small-towns strategy suits drainage well, because emergency searches are hyper-local and competition in market towns is lighter. The forwarded local landline helps with trust, since a local number reassures an anxious caller. What it does not do is respond to the missed call automatically; the call forwards to your mobile and if you cannot answer, it is voicemail. It does not guarantee rankings or call volume and cites more than 170 members.

Verdict: A well-suited flat-fee presence with directly relevant drainage proof, but no automatic answer to the missed 11pm call, and twice the monthly cost of the entry above.

3. Tea Powered Projects

Best for: Established drainage companies wanting a bespoke, fast site with managed SEO and published drain engineer results

Tea Powered Projects in Nottingham names drain engineers among its trades and publishes results for a drain engineer alongside a locksmith and an auto locksmith, all emergency-led trades. It builds on its own CMS platform with conversion optimisation, local and technical SEO, Google Business Profile work, hosting, IT support and AI consultancy.

This is the most relevant case study evidence on the page after Trustmark. The barrier is price: £4,500 upfront for a bespoke site plus a monthly platform plan from £95 to £1,000 on a 12-month minimum, with managed SEO from £500 a month. For a regional drainage company with several vans and commercial contracts, a fast, well-optimised site may pay for itself in emergency search visibility. For a one-van engineer it is a heavy commitment, and the missed-call response is not part of the offer.

Verdict: Credible drainage experience and a quality build for a larger firm, but the entry cost and the absence of call-response automation keep it at third.

4. Scale Through Us

Best for: Drainage firms wanting a managed ads department with SMS and territory limits

Scale Through Us, in London and UK-wide, lists plumbing and damp proofing among its trades and sells a fully managed growth department: Facebook, Instagram and Google ads, web design, SMS marketing, reputation management, email, SEO, CRM integration and automation, and growth consultancy, capped at three businesses per niche per location.

Google Ads are the relevant channel for drainage emergencies, and the SMS marketing line could in principle support a missed-call response, though the site does not describe one. Pricing is not published and the proof is three short testimonials from electrical, roofing and driveway clients, none drainage.

Verdict: Relevant channels in a broad package, but nothing drainage-specific to point to and no published price.

5. SanXpert Digital

Best for: Drainage engineers running Google Ads who want out-of-hours leads captured automatically

SanXpert Digital names drainage engineers among its trades, works exclusively with trade businesses, says it has 12 years of doing so and covers more than 80 UK towns and cities. It offers Google Ads, Google Business Profile management, local SEO, AI automation for out-of-hours lead capture, AI visibility work for ChatGPT and Gemini, and web development, building campaigns around trade-specific sales cycles with emergency work treated differently from replacement work.

On paper the emergency framing and the out-of-hours AI capture are a close match for drainage, which is why it is here at all. It ranks fifth because the proof is a single roofing testimonial, prices are not published, and it is an ads-and-visibility service rather than a system that follows up and asks for reviews. Fees are fixed monthly with no percentage of ad spend, rolling with no contract, and it offers a free live strategy audit.

Verdict: The right instincts for an emergency trade, with paid search and out-of-hours capture, let down by thin evidence and the absence of the follow-on chain.

What we would tell a drainage engineer

If you work alone or with one other engineer, the missed call is your biggest leak, and Riley Marketing is the only option here that recovers it automatically and drops it into something you can work from. The fee is one callout a month, and the pay-after-build model means you can see the text back working on your own number before you commit. Set it up along the lines of our missed-call text back setup guide so the message asks for the postcode and the problem.

If you want more emergency volume on top, SanXpert Digital's paid search with out-of-hours capture is the most relevant demand layer, and Trustmark Trades is the alternative base for a firm in a cluster of small towns that does not mind answering the phone itself. Tea Powered Projects is a conversation for the regional company with commercial contracts, and Scale Through Us for a firm that wants an entire department.

Two cautions. First, if you are missing more than a handful of calls a day, a text back may not be enough and an AI receptionist becomes worth pricing. Second, measure everything in booked callouts and repairs, not clicks or leads, because in drainage a lead you did not answer in time is worth exactly nothing.

Frequently asked questions

How quickly do drainage customers move to the next firm?

Within a minute or two. An emergency caller who reaches voicemail rings the next listing almost immediately, so an instant text back or an answered call decides the job.

Does a drainage firm need pages for every town?

Yes. Blocked drain searches are hyper-local, and a page for each town you cover, plus a well-kept Google Business Profile, is how you appear in the three results the caller sees.

How should a CCTV survey lead to a repair quote?

Send the findings and the repair options as a tracked quote page the same day, with lining and excavation side by side. Keep the job in a CRM with a quoted status so it is followed up.

Is Google Ads worth it for blocked drains?

Often, because the intent is immediate and the job value is reasonable. Make sure missed calls are being recovered first, or you pay for calls that go to voicemail.
